She is one of the icons in Vietnamese women's volleyball but has just faced a very unfortunate outcome.
The Thông Tin Military Team entered phase two of the 2025 National Volleyball Championship still missing the service of former national player Bùi Thị Ngà.
Bùi Thị Ngà is a legend in Vietnamese women's volleyball. Standing 1.87 meters tall, she is likened to a "tower" on the court. During her peak years, she was not only the top scorer for Thông Tin Đông Bắc Club but also a key figure in the Vietnam National Team.
Throughout her career, Bùi Thị Ngà earned numerous individual and team awards. However, a serious knee ligament injury forced her to quit as she could not fully recover. At the end of 2022, Bùi Thị Ngà decided to end her volleyball career at just 28 years old.
During her prime, Bùi Thị Ngà received an invitation to play in Japan, one of the world’s leading volleyball countries. However, she chose to decline, wanting to stay committed to Thông Tin Đông Bắc. This decision disappointed many fans who wished to see this famous middle blocker compete against international stars in challenging, high-level matches.
After retiring from professional play, Bùi Thị Ngà joined the coaching staff of Thông Tin Đông Bắc and took responsibility for scouting young talents for the military women's volleyball team. In May 2022, she married businessman Vũ Xuân Hoàng, the representative for Lexus cars in Vietnam.
Nearly two years after retiring as an athlete, Bùi Thị Ngà experienced great happiness when she officially became a mother. On June 8, 2024, she gave birth to her first child and received congratulations from many volleyball colleagues, especially former teammates like Phạm Thị Yến, Linh Chi, Trần Việt Hương, Nguyệt Anh, Phạm Thị Huệ, and others.
After giving birth, Bùi Thị Ngà put aside her work at Thông Tin Đông Bắc to focus on caring for her little "angel" and her family. More than eight months after becoming a mother, this once-famous middle blocker returned to her usual routine and continued pursuing her volleyball passion. Notably, she resumed training with the goal of competing in the 2025 National Championship.
Unfortunately, the renowned former middle blocker of Vietnamese women's volleyball did not reach her best physical condition, so the military team's coaching staff decided not to include her in the competition roster.
In phase one, Bùi Thị Ngà was included in the preliminary list. However, after a long break due to injury, marriage, and childbirth, she has yet to regain the form and fitness expected.
Bùi Thị Ngà stands 1.87 meters tall and is one of the best middle blockers in the history of Vietnamese women's volleyball.
Therefore, the Thông Tin Military Team’s coaches planned to use a 1.86-meter middle blocker for the next phase. However, during preparations for phase two of the 2025 National Volleyball Championship, Bùi Thị Ngà unfortunately showed signs of injury recurrence and also missed the recent important training camp of Thông Tin Military Team in Shanghai, China.
Coach Phạm Văn Long confirmed that he will be looking for alternative players in the middle blocker position after being unable to use Bùi Thị Ngà.
Before her career was interrupted, Bùi Thị Ngà was considered one of Vietnam’s top middle blockers. With her outstanding height and effective blocking ability, she was a key player for both the Thông Tin Military Team and the national team.
The peak of Ngà’s career was competing at the 2019 SEA Games 30 with the Vietnamese women's national team. Now at 31 years old, although her experience and competitive spirit remain, it seems unlikely that Bùi Thị Ngà will return to top-level competition.
Meanwhile, the Thông Tin Military Team is making careful preparations for phase two. After the training camp in China, the whole team is expected to move to Ninh Bình in early October to finalize preparations. Currently, they stand third in the women's group with 3 wins and 2 losses.
Notably, the military team recently strengthened their squad by officially signing Russian outside hitter Irina Voronkova on September 24.
The attacker born in 1995 has arrived in Vietnam and begun integrating with her new teammates. Voronkova’s presence promises to enhance the attacking strength of the Thông Tin Military Team in the crucial stage of the season.
Phase two of the 2025 National Championship will take place from October 7 to 16 in Ninh Bình. With Bùi Thị Ngà unable to return, the military team hopes new players like Voronkova will bring fresh momentum and help improve their standing in the championship race.
