The challenging journey of Hanoi volleyball

The second round of the 2025 National Volleyball Championship will begin in Ninh Binh. For the Hanoi men's squad, this is more than just the next match; it’s a decisive journey to secure their place in the league — a feat they managed last season. Following five consecutive defeats in phase one, the capital’s team must transform to keep their hopes alive.

Middle blocker Vu Ngoc Hoang, who has just returned from injury, shared: "I just recently resumed training electrically, and I’m only at about 70-80% of my best form. Not yet at my peak, but my goal for this round is to help the team successfully avoid relegation and focus on recovering from my injury."

Ngoc Hoang’s return carries significant meaning, as he is not only an experienced player but also a mental pillar for the younger teammates. Although not at his peak performance, his presence in the middle helps Hanoi significantly strengthen their blocking ability, a weakness that caused difficulties in phase 1.

Notably, this round Hanoi also benefits from the addition of foreign player Kuon Mom, a Cambodian athlete who played for La Vie Long An last season. He officially joined the team on September 25 and quickly adapted well to the playing style.

"He is sociable, highly skilled, and trains very seriously. Since Kouon Mom arrived, our team feels revitalized," shared Ngoc Hoang.

The signing of Kouon Mom was not a random decision. Hanoi needed a player capable of making a difference, especially as they will face La Vie Tay Ninh, a direct rival in the relegation battle, in this round.

Coincidentally, the Cambodian foreign player is very familiar with the playing style of Southwestern Vietnam volleyball, having spent many years playing for Long An, a team in the same region as Tay Ninh.

Kuon Mom expressed: "I have many memories and friends at Lavie Tay Ninh (formerly Lavie Long An), but I am a professional athlete. This year, I play for Hanoi, and my goal is to help my team win to open up relegation survival opportunities."

The combination of Kuon Mom with key players like Vu Ngoc Hoang - Xuan Viet (middle blockers), Ly Van Chuong (opposite hitter), along with the main attackers Xuan Duc and Kuon Mom, is expected to bring a fresh look to the capital’s team. If they perform to their potential, Hanoi can compete fairly with teams like LaVie Tay Ninh or Sanest Khanh Hoa in the same group.

Last year, despite lacking a foreign player, Hanoi had to play in the relegation playoff but successfully stayed in the league after intense matches. That experience of overcoming hardship is a valuable asset for the capital team to enter this season with greater determination.

With the current roster, Hanoi is far from weak. What they need now is fierce fighting spirit and the ability to seize opportunities in every play. Each match in round 2 is like their own "final," and a victory over La Vie Tay Ninh in the opening game could mark a major turning point.

"The whole team just hopes to play to their potential, gradually overcoming difficulties. As long as we maintain unity, the chance remains," Ngoc Hoang added.

Hanoi volleyball has never had it easy, but it has never lacked resilience. A challenging season lies ahead, and if they continue to demonstrate the tenacity shown in previous years, the capital’s team can definitely continue writing an emotional survival story through effort and solidarity.
