Sports sector representative comments on the Vietnamese women's volleyball team's support system as they prepare for the SEA Games

The nutritional policy for the Vietnamese women's volleyball team during their preparation for the 2025 SEA Games has stirred debate.

The Vietnamese women's volleyball team started training in Quang Ninh on October 25 to get ready for SEA Games 33, but this plan has been controversial due to the Vietnam Sports Administration's nutrition regulations.

According to the decision issued on October 24, the training list includes 20 players; however, only 16 people (including 4 coaches) receive the special nutrition allowance of 480,000 VND per day, while the other 8 athletes get only 320,000 VND per day, the usual rate. This division has caused disappointment because all are national team members yet are treated differently within the same team.

In response to SGGP, a representative from Vietnam's sports sector said that after establishing the national women's volleyball team with 20 players for SEA Games 33, the Volleyball Department and coaching staff were asked to review the squad to identify athletes eligible for the nutrition allowance according to regulations. The aim is to ensure fairness, encourage competition between starters and reserves, and provide athletes with optimal training conditions.

"Currently, Vietnam's sports sector is evaluating the teams preparing for SEA Games 33 at the national level. The policy is to thoroughly review athletes officially listed for SEA Games 33 to grant them the special nutrition allowance of 480,000 VND per person per day under Circular 86/2020/TT-BTC issued by the Ministry of Finance in 2020, which details the special nutrition regime for high-performance coaches and athletes. This is implemented across all national teams, not just the volleyball team," the sports sector representative told SGGP.

On October 19, 2025, the SEA Games 33 organizing committee announced the indoor volleyball draw held in Thailand. In the women's category, 7 teams will participate; Vietnam is in Group B with Indonesia, Myanmar, and Malaysia; Group A includes Thailand, the Philippines, and Singapore.

Being placed in a group considered not too tough allows Coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet’s team to conveniently test their lineup before the semifinals. The Vietnamese women's volleyball team aims to win gold after three consecutive silver medals, while defending champion Thailand pursues their 17th SEA Games title.

Two stars of Vietnamese women's volleyball, Tran Thi Thanh Thuy and Bich Thuy, will join the team late due to playing abroad. Before departing for Thailand for SEA Games 33, Coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet will trim the roster to 14 official players.

Recently, Somporn Usibangyang, President of the Thailand Volleyball Federation, stated that Thailand’s women’s volleyball team will mobilize all key players, including those competing overseas, to maintain their number one status in Southeast Asia.

The strongest lineup from their biggest rival makes the gold medal goal for Coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet’s team even more difficult.
