The tale of Amorntep Konhan, the captain of Thailand’s men’s volleyball team, is causing a public uproar.
The story of Amorntep Konhan, captain of Thailand’s national men’s volleyball team, has caused a stir as he revealed being deceived into enrolling in a “free” master’s program and ended up paying nearly 120,000 baht (equivalent to 100 million VND) from his own pocket to complete the course.
According to Amorntep, after graduating from university, he was invited by someone claiming to represent an international training program, promising a full scholarship at Southeast Asia University.
In return, he only needed to compete for the school in the Thai Student Sports Games. Trusting this introduction, the athlete registered and studied for two years, hoping to both learn and contribute to student sports.
However, throughout his studies, Amorntep only received a symbolic travel allowance of 200 baht per trip, while having to cover all tuition and living expenses himself. Upon completing his thesis, he discovered no scholarship program existed as promised. To receive his diploma, Amorntep had to pay the entire outstanding tuition fee of 119,600 baht.
In a personal post, Amorntep stated he does not seek to reclaim the lost money but wants to warn other young athletes.
The story of the Thai team captain quickly spread on social media, attracting thousands of comments expressing sympathy and outrage. Many in the sports community see this as a warning to young athletes seeking opportunities to study while competing, emphasizing that all scholarships should be verified and legally guaranteed before enrollment.
Currently, Southeast Asia University has not issued an official response, while the Thai Volleyball Federation said it will review and assist Amorntep in clarifying the details of this unfortunate incident.
