Truth and rumors about Ho Chi Minh City Police recruiting world runner-up Nikolov for the Hung Vuong Cup 2026

The Vietnamese volleyball transfer market suddenly heated up overnight as a TikTok channel presumed to be from the Ho Chi Minh City Police Club uploaded hinting images regarding the recruitment of top world young setter Simeon Nikolov for the Hung Vuong Cup.

This move immediately shocked experts and fans. If the deal becomes reality, it would not only be a "blockbuster" contract for Vietnamese volleyball but also create a significant impact across Asia, even on an international scale.

Simeon "Moni" Vladimirov Nikolov, born in 2006, is the setter for the Bulgarian national team and currently plays for Lokomotiv Novosibirsk in the Russian National League.

With a height reaching 2.09m, Nikolov is considered a pioneering model of the modern setter generation, players who not only organize gameplay but can also directly attack to score points.

Nikolov previously helped the Bulgarian men's volleyball team secure the runner-up position at the 2025 World Volleyball Championship.

His powerful serving ability, sharp secondary attacks, and outstanding physique have helped this 19-year-old talent quickly become one of the most promising young talents in world volleyball.

Nikolov's impressive performance for the Bulgarian national team previously caused a major stir. He contributed to helping the men's volleyball team from Eastern Europe achieve the runner-up title at the 2025 World Volleyball Championship.

Nikolov was also a standout in Bulgaria's 2025 Volleyball Nations League campaign. During the qualifying stage, this setter scored 28 points, including 15 attack points, 5 blocks, and 8 serve points. In the 3-0 victory over Argentina in Quebec, he and his older brother Aleksandar Nikolov contributed 20 points, with Simeon himself sealing the match with two consecutive aces.

Nikolov is currently one of the world's top young setters.

Before moving to Russia for professional play, Nikolov had a breakout season wearing the Long Beach State University jersey. In his debut season in 2025, he made 1,030 successful scoring passes, averaging 9.60 assists per set, while also contributing 153 attack points and 77 block points.

In May 2025, Nikolov joined Lokomotiv Novosibirsk on a one-year contract with an option to extend for two more seasons. Under the guidance of Coach Plamen Konstantinov, he was quickly positioned to become the primary setter for the Russian team. Nikolov himself stated that his decision to go to Russia aimed to gain experience in one of the world's most competitive leagues, thereby elevating the Bulgarian national team.

Therefore, if the Ho Chi Minh City Police Club manages to invite Nikolov to play even for a short-term tournament, it would be a major surprise. However, whether the deal materializes depends on Lokomotiv Novosibirsk's match schedule.

The Russian team is competing for third place in the National League under a BO3 format with matches scheduled on April 21, 22, and 26. If the series ends early with a 2-0 score, Nikolov could potentially travel to Vietnam and play in the Hung Vuong Cup semifinal against The Cong Tan Cang on April 24. Conversely, if the series extends to the third match, Vietnamese fans will not witness this young talent playing in this year's Hung Vuong Cup.
